Air Fryer Ribeye is such a juicy and delicious cut of beef. It can be bought bone-in or boneless. You might think it’s ghastly to cook such a nice cut in the air fryer, but trust me it’s a fantastic way to cook a steak.
Even if you’re skeptical, I suggest giving this a try, because this Air Fryer Ribeye recipe will no doubt surprise you. We’ve made Air Fryer Filet Mignon and Air Fryer Sirloin Steaks the same way, and they turn out perfectly juicy and tender every time, with minimal prep and only about 10 minutes to cook.
Serve these ribeye steaks in the air fryer alongside other sides you can make at the same time, like air fryer green beans or air fryer sweet potatoes. If you have a Ninja XL Double Basket air fryer, it’s incredibly simple to make your whole meal at the same time.
Ingredients Needed
- Ribeye Steaks – Approximately 8 ounces each and between 1-2″ thick. I usually buy and cook a boneless ribeye. You can do either, but the cook time may change a bit.
- Salted Butter – If you don’t have salted butter you can add a pinch of salt to your butter mixture.
- Garlic Clove – Make sure your garlic is fresh for the best flavor. It can get bitter and lose it’s nuanced flavor once it sprouts.
- Fresh parsley and rosemary – You can use dried herbs if you have to, but fresh adds so much more flavor.
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil – Use the best quality olive oil that you have.
- Salt & Ground Black Pepper
What is Ribeye Steak?
Ribeye steak is a cut of beef that is taken from the rib section of a cow. It is a boneless cut that is recognized for its rich, buttery flavor and tender texture.
The rib-eye is basically the meat between each of the ribs, which makes it a boneless cut, but it can be cut with the bone-in too. It is usually sliced from the cow’s 6th to 12th rib bones like the prime rib. It is enriched by a layer of fat surrounding the tender ‘eye’ that separates the two muscles it comes from.
How to Make Air Fryer Ribeye Steak
Remove the steak from the refrigerator 30 minutes before cooking to bring it up to room temperature. This will help the steak cook evenly in the air fryer. Coat the steak with olive oil – this keeps it from drying out. Season both sides generously with salt (and pepper, if you want).
Preheat the air fryer to 400° F for 5 minutes. Some air fryers don’t need to be pre-heated on a regular basis, but I always do it for steaks. It’s important for two reasons. It will cook them at an even temperature throughout, and it will help to get a browned sear on each side.
Place the steak in the basket. If you’re cooking two steaks at a time, make sure they aren’t touching. If 2 steaks are too large for your basket, you’ll need to do two batches. If they are touching, they won’t cook properly. The air needs to circulate freely around the steaks.
I always recommend cooking steaks to medium rare for the best texture and flavor. Of course you can cook it more or less, depending on your preference.
If you’re aiming for medium rare, cook the steaks for 10 minutes, turning them over at the halfway point. For me, this works well for 1 1/4 inch steaks. You might need more or less time.
After 10 minutes, check the meat with a meat thermometer to determine the internal temperature and continue cooking in 2 minute increments until your desired doneness is reached.
- For medium rare, you want 130°F (54°C)
- For medium it’s 140°F (60°C)
- For medium well it’s 150°F (66°C)
- For well done it’s 160°F (71°C)
Remove the steaks at the proper temperature and place them on a plate. Place a slice of butter on the top of the steak and let it rest for 5 minutes before serving. The butter will melt down over the sides of the steak, coating it in buttery goodness.
During this rest period, the steak will continue to climb in temperature, bringing it up to the proper serving temperature for your preferred doneness.
Remember that every air fryer differs as does the thickness of your steak, so you will need to use a meat thermometer after 10 minutes of cook time to get the proper doneness you prefer.
Helpful Tips
- Bring the steak to room temperature before cooking by letting it sit out for about 30 minutes. This will help the steak cook more evenly.
- Preheat your air fryer to ensure that it reaches the correct cooking temperature.
- Use a meat thermometer to ensure that the steak is cooked to your preferred internal temperature. For medium-rare, the final internal temperature after resting should be around 135°F.
- Use a sharp knife to slice the steak against the grain for maximum tenderness.
- Pair the steak with your favorite sides, such as asparagus, mashed potatoes, or a fresh salad.
Storing Options
It’s always best to consume steak right after it’s been cooked, but if you find yourself with leftovers, all is not lost. You can store it and reheat it later.
- Refrigerate: You can store cooked ribeye in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4-5 days. When reheating, be sure to do so gently and slowly, so as not to overcook the steak.
- Freeze: You can also freeze cooked ribeye for longer-term storage. Wrap the steak tightly in plastic wrap and then in foil or freezer paper, and store in the freezer for up to 2-3 months. When ready to eat, thaw the steak overnight in the refrigerator.
- Make leftovers into a new dish: You can also repurpose any leftover ribeye steak into a new dish, such as a steak salad, stir-fry, or sandwich.

How long does it take to cook ribeye steaks in an air fryer?
Cooking time depends on the thickness of the steak and the best way to know how long to cook it is by using a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature. Should I marinate the steak first?
I do not recommend marinating steak. The joy of this cut of beef is the natural flavor and texture. Marinating will change both of those things. Instead, generously season the steak with salt and pepper, then use a compound butter on top at the end to enhance the flavor.
