This simple Air fryer Chicken Sausage is super quick and easy to make. These sausages are cooked to perfection in just 10 minutes, faster and cleaner than cooking on the stove top.
Chicken sausage is the perfect go-to when you’re hungry but don’t know what to make or are feeling lazy. I often make it for dinner with some peppers and onions on the side. They make a great lunch, snack, dinner – even a delicious breakfast. I mean, what’s not to love?
Why You’ll Love It
- Crispy and Juicy: Air frying chicken sausage results in a deliciously crispy exterior while keeping the insides juicy and flavorful.
- Healthier Option: Enjoy a lighter alternative to traditionally fried sausages, as air frying requires minimal oil, reducing overall calorie and fat content.
- Quick and Convenient: Air fryer chicken sausage cooks in a fraction of the time it takes to bake or grill, making it a convenient option for busy weeknight dinners or quick snacks.
» These Air Fryer Peppers and Onions are a great side to serve with this chicken sausage.
Ingredients You Need
- Chicken Sausage: The only ingredient you need here is the sausage. You can easily get them from any grocery store. However, they often come in several flavors. I prefer Aidell’s Smoked Chicken Sausage or Chicken & Apple Sausage.
- Onion and bell pepper: Optional. They make an easy side dish cooked at the same time.
While this recipe specifically focuses on chicken sausage, that’s not the only type of sausage you can cook in the air fryer with this recipe. Any sausages you like that are roughly the same size can be cooked in 10 minutes. Cut the time down for smaller sausages.
Equipment Information
- Air fryer: I use the 5.5-quart Ninja MaxXL basket-style air fryer. Angie uses this 5-quart Cosori Pro LE air fryer. We also both occasionally use the Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Grill that has an air fryer setting.
- Kitchen tongs: It’s very easy to remove food from your air fryer with kitchen tongs. I use these kitchen tongs that are silicon coated so they don’t scratch the interior.
- Meat thermometer: The only way to tell if meat is fully cooked to the right temperature is to use a meat thermometer. I use this Instant Read thermometer. It’s so quick to open the basket and check the temp.
Helpful Tips
- Remember that all air fryers cook at a different rate, due to differing wattages. It’s always best to keep an eye on the sausages as they cook, and use a meat thermometer to ensure they reach a safe internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
- While air fryers require less oil than traditional frying methods, lightly spraying or brushing the sausages with oil can help enhance browning and flavor.
- After air frying, allow the sausages to rest for a few minutes before serving to help redistribute the juices and ensure optimal flavor and texture.
Stovetop Directions
Don’t have an air fryer? No problem!
This dish is easily cooked on the stovetop in a skillet. Just put all of the ingredients in the skillet with a small amount of cooking oil or butter and sauté until cooked through.
Keep an eye on the sausages as they cook, and use a meat thermometer to ensure they reach a safe internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
Simple Air Fryer Chicken Sausage
Equipment
- Kitchen Tongs
- Meat thermometer
Ingredients
- 4 chicken sausages like Aidell’s
- 1 onion sliced, optional
- 1 bell pepper sliced, optional
Instructions
- Preheat the air fryer on for 5 mins.
- Place as many air fryer sausages in the basket as you want.
- Cook the chicken sausage on 375ºF (190ºC) for 10 minutes, flipping halfway through the cooking time. The internal temperature should be 165ºF(74°C) when done.
- You can add sliced onion and bell pepper to the air fryer basket underneath the sausage if desired. You will want to spray the basket with cooking oil to keep the onions and peppers from sticking to the basket.
- Air fryer models vary and some cook hotter than others. Keep an eye on the sausage the first time you make this recipe, in case yours cooks faster. Adjust the time as needed.
