Air Fryer Halloumi is a delicious and simple recipe that combines the squeaky, salty goodness of halloumi cheese with the convenience and efficiency of an air fryer.

Air frying is an incredibly convenient and hassle-free method of cooking halloumi. Not only does it offer a deliciously crispy texture, but it does it with virtually no mess to clean up.

Enjoy the halloumi by pairing it with some delicious dipping sauces. Try dipping the halloumi in ketchup or BBQ sauce for a classic combination. If you prefer a slightly sweeter taste, drizzle honey over the cheese. And if you’re feeling something different, go for a tangy kick with sweet chili sauce.

Serve it alongside our air fryer falafel or as a side for a main dish like thick pork chops.

Ingredients Needed

halloumi sliced
  • Halloumi – A semi-hard, salty cheese with a unique texture that holds up well to air frying
  • Olive Oil – Olive oil is used to brush the halloumi slices before air frying

How to Make Air Fryer Halloumi

Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 2 minutes. Doing this will make sure the cheese gets hot immediately, rather than slowly heating up, which will keep it more moist.

Brush or spray the halloumi slices with olive oil on both sides. This step isn’t entirely necessary, but does lead to a more crispy exterior.

halloumi slices in the air fryer basket

Place them in the air fryer basket, not overlapping. Cook for 6 minutes, until golden brown on the top. If they aren’t golden on the underside, carefully flip them and cook for another 1-2 minutes, until golden on all sides.

Transfer to a plate and serve immediately.

Helpful Tips

  • You can cook as few or as many slices as you want at a time, without overlapping.
  • I don’t find it necessary to flip them over, but if you do be careful because they can easily break apart.
  • Adjust the thickness of the halloumi slices based on personal preference. Thicker slices will have a more substantial and chewy texture, while thinner slices will be crispier.
  • If the halloumi is very salty, you can soak the slices in cold water for 10-15 minutes before air frying to reduce the saltiness. Pat them dry thoroughly before brushing them with oil.
  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket. Make sure to leave enough space between the halloumi slices to allow proper air circulation.
  • Remember to clean your air fryer thoroughly after use, as melted cheese can leave residues.

How to Store

Refrigerator: Store any leftover air-fried halloumi in an airtight container or a zip-top bag in the refrigerator. It can typically be stored for up to 3-4 days.

Freezer: If you want to store air-fried halloumi for a longer period, you can freeze it. Place the cooled halloumi slices in a freezer-safe container or wrap them tightly in plastic wrap. It is recommended to consume the frozen halloumi within 1-2 months for the best quality.

How to Reheat

Air Fryer: Reheating your air-fried halloumi in the air fryer is a great option to regain its crispy texture. Simply place the halloumi slices back in the air fryer at 400°F for a few minutes until they are heated through.

Stovetop Pan: Reheating halloumi on a stovetop pan is a quick and convenient method. Heat a non-stick or lightly oiled pan over medium heat, add the halloumi slices, and cook for a couple of minutes on each side until heated through and slightly crispy.

Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F, place the halloumi slices on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and heat for about 5-7 minutes or until they are heated through and crispy.
