Ingredients You’ll Need

Ingredients for green bean casserole
  • Fresh Green Beans – You can use any green beans you like: string beans, snap beans, French beans, and haricots verts.
  • Cream of Mushroom Soup – It’s easiest to use a can of soup, but you can make your own cream of mushroom mix if you don’t like canned soup.
  • Milk – Any type of milk or half and half is fine, as is almond, soy or rice milk.
  • Worcestershire Sauce – Gives a savory punch of flavor, can be subbed with soy sauce.
  • Garlic Salt – garlic salt can be replaced with garlic powder and salt, or fresh garlic and salt.
  • Ground Black Pepper
  • Cheddar Cheese – Feel free to use your favorite meltable cheese variety.
  • Crispy Fried Onions – I use Fresh Gourmet Crispy Onions that I get at Von’s, but any brand will work, or make your own.

Equipment Information

  • Air fryer: I use this 4-quart basket-style air fryer. It’s large enough to fit a meal for 4-6. But some things need more space in the air fryer basket, so they cook evenly.
  • Oven-safe baking dish: I use a silicone baking tray that fits in my air fryer basket.
  • Kitchen tongs: It’s very easy to remove food from your air fryer with kitchen tongs. I use these kitchen tongs that are silicon coated so they don’t scratch the interior.

Tips for Making Air Fryer Green Bean Casserole

  • You can easily double or triple the recipe, as long as you have space in your air fryer. You can also cook it in batches, if necessary.
  • Make sure your green beans are fresh and not wilted. Fresh beans will yield the best results.
  • Before placing them in the air fryer, make sure the fresh green beans are thoroughly dry. This helps achieve that desired crispiness.
  • Make sure the dish you use is air fryer safe (it should say oven safe on it). It can be dangerous to use glass in the air fryer when it’s not rated for use in an oven.

How to Store & Reheat: Quick Tips

How to Store

Fridge: Place any leftover casserole in an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator. It’s best to consume within 2-3 days for optimal freshness.

Freezer: Place the casserole in the freezer. It can be stored for up to 2-3 months. It’s important to note that freezing can affect the texture of the green beans.

How to Reheat

Air Fryer: To maintain the crispiness of the topping, preheat your air fryer to around 350°F. Reheat the casserole for about 5-7 minutes or until it’s heated through. Keep an eye on it to avoid overcooking.

Oven: Alternatively, you can reheat the casserole in a preheated oven at 350°F. Cover it with aluminum foil to prevent the top from burning and heat for approximately 15-20 minutes or until it’s warmed to your liking.

Microwave: For a quick reheat, you can use the microwave. Place a portion on a microwave-safe plate, cover it with a microwave-safe lid or microwave-safe plastic wrap, and heat in 30-second intervals

Questions About the Recipe

Can I use canned green beans instead of fresh ones?

Yes, you can use canned green beans as a time-saving alternative. Drain and rinse them before using. Just remember that canned beans have been blanched ahead of time and are already partially cooked, so they will take less time in the air fryer. Watch carefully because they can easily become a soggy mess.

Which is better frozen or canned green beans for green bean casserole?

I think that frozen green beans work best in this casserole if you can’t use fresh. Canned green beans can end up being really soft and soggy. It’s really best to stick with fresh beans.

Can I add bacon to the casserole for extra flavor?

Absolutely! Crumbled bacon is a delicious addition to this casserole. You’ll want to precook the bacon and add it either to the soup mix or just as a crispy topping at the end.
