Air Fryer Sweet Potato Chips get nicely crisp without all the oil you would use in deep frying and they’re so quick to make as an appetizer or snack.
Everyone loves sweet potato fries, so why not sweet potato chips? We think these are the perfect snacking chips to serve at a party or just to have as a snack in place of regular potato chips.
Why You’ll Love It
- They are slightly sweet, super crispy, and easy to make, especially if you have a mandolin to slice the sweet potatoes.
- The rapid air circulation in the air fryer ensures that your sweet potato slices become perfectly crispy without the need for excessive oil.
- In just a matter of minutes, you can transform raw sweet potato slices into a batch of golden, crispy chips.
Ball Jack says: I tried these sweet potato chips in my air fryer and they turned out amazing! So crispy and delicious.
Polland says: These sweet potato chips were a hit with my whole family. I’ll definitely be making them again soon!
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Sweet potato – This recipe only calls for one sweet potato, unpeeled and washed.
- Olive oil – Olive oil is our go-to but you can use whatever oil spray you like.
- Salt – A light sprinkling of fine salt is all that is needed.
Equipment Information
- Air fryer: I use this 4-quart basket-style air fryer. It’s large enough to fit a meal for 4-6. But some things need more space in the air fryer basket, so they cook evenly.
- Kitchen tongs: It’s very easy to remove food from your air fryer with kitchen tongs. I use these kitchen tongs that are silicon coated so they don’t scratch the interior.
- Mandolin – A mandolin will help you thinly slice the sweet potato (as thin as a regular potato chip).
Helpful Tips
- You don’t have to spray the basket with cooking spray, since the potatoes have oil on them.
- The cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of your slices. They can take anywhere from 8-12 minutes to finish cooking.
- After 5 minutes start watching them closely, to avoid burning and remove as soon as some brown appears.
- They might still be a little flexible in the middle, but they’ll crisp up when cooled. If you’re not sure, take one out of the basket and allow it to cool for 15 seconds to see if it crisps properly. If not, continue cooking.
- You can somewhat overlap the slices in the basket, but don’t pile them on top of each other or they won’t cook properly. Work in batches instead.
Variations
These chips are delicious with just a sprinkle of salt but just think about all of the possibilities! Try sprinkling one of these onto the freshly cooked sweet potato chips.
- Parmesan cheese
- Cinnamon sugar
- Cajun seasoning
- Carne asada rub
- Smoked paprika
- Brewer’s yeast
Oven Cooking Instructions
If you don’t have an air fryer, you can bake the sweet potato chips. Here are the oven baking instructions.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicon mat. Lightly coat with olive oil and a sprinkle of salt. Lay them out in a single layer on the sheet.
- Bake at 350°F(175°C) for about 15-18 minutes. After about 13 minutes, start to watch the chips closely so they don’t burn and remove them as soon as a little bit of brown starts to appear on the chips. Place on a cooling rack for a few minutes to cool and crisp up.
Storing Leftovers
To store leftover sweet potato chips, allow them to cool completely then place them in an airtight container or resealable plastic bag. This will protect them from moisture which can make them go stale or chewy.
Store them in a cool, dry place, such as a pantry or cupboard, for up to 5 days. For even longer storage, you can freeze the chips for up to 2 months in an airtight container. Be sure to label the container with the date so you can keep track of the shelf life.
To thaw frozen sweet potato chips, allow them to come to room temperature before reheating them in the oven or air fryer to regain their crispiness.
Questions About the Recipe
Why are my sweet potato chips not crispy in the air fryer?
It’s possible that you have overcrowded the basket. The chips need to be in a single layer so that they can get full air circulating around them. You may also need to dry them better or spray them with another mist of oil.
Do you have to soak sweet potatoes in water before air frying?
We recommend it. Soaking will remove some of the starch so the potatoes don’t oxidize and turn an off color. It also helps them crisp up. Sounds counterproductive, but it’s not.
Why are my sweet potato chips burning?
If your chips are burning the temperature in your air fryer needs to be decreased. Too high of a temp will make them burn before they are fully cooked. Remember that not all air fryers cook at the same level, so you might need to adjust our recipe guidelines to suit your air fryer.

Crispy Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes Chips
Equipment
Ingredients
- 1 large sweet potato unpeeled and washed
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) olive oil
- 1/4 teaspoon (2 g) salt
Instructions
- Preheat air fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Thinly slice the sweet potato (as thin as a regular potato chip), using a mandoline, if possible. Rinse the slices in cold water and pat dry.
- Lightly coat the slices with olive oil and a sprinkle of salt. Lay them out in a single layer in the air fryer. Cook in batches, rather than crowd the basket.
- Air fry at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes. After 5 minutes, shake the basket and space out the chips again. Watch the chips closely, checking every other minute, so they don't burn and remove them as soon as a little bit of brown starts to appear on the chips. They might still be a little flexible; they'll crisp as they cool.
- Place on a cooling rack for a few minutes to cool and crisp up.
Notes
- You don’t have to spray the basket with cooking spray, since the potatoes have olive oil on them.
- The cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of your slices. They can take anywhere from 8-12 minutes to finish cooking.
- You can somewhat overlap the slices in the basket, but don’t pile them on top of each other or they won’t cook properly. Work in batches instead.

- They might still be a little flexible in the middle, but they’ll crispy up when cooled. If you’re not sure, take one out of the basket and allow it to cool for 15 seconds to see if it crisps properly. If not, continue cooking.
All air fryers have different wattage and may cook at different rates. You may need to adjust the time or temp for the best results.
