This dish brings together tender slices of beef in a rich, savory sauce, all without the need for deep frying. If you’re craving the bold flavors of your favorite Asian restaurant, this air fryer Mongolian beef will satisfy your taste buds while keeping things simple and healthier.
Enjoy the delicious taste of Mongolian beef with significantly less oil, making it a lighter option compared to traditional recipes.
The air fryer speeds up the cooking process, allowing you to have a flavorful, restaurant-quality meal ready in under 30 minutes.
Helpful Tips
- Marinate the beef for at least 30 minutes, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to penetrate the meat. Use a marinade made with soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and a touch of brown sugar for a rich, authentic taste.
- Lightly coat the marinated beef strips with cornstarch before cooking. Shake off any excess cornstarch to avoid clumping.
- Cook the beef in a single layer in the air fryer basket, ensuring there is enough space around each piece for air to circulate. If you have a lot of beef, cook it in batches.

Air Fryer Mongolian Beef
Equipment
Ingredients
- 1 pound (454 g) steak thinly sliced (flank, skirt, etc)
- 1/4 cup (32 g) cornstarch
- Cooking oil spray
- 2 teaspoons (10 ml) vegetable oil
- 1 clove garlic minced
- 1 teaspoon (2 g) fresh ginger grated
- 1/4 cup (59 ml) less-sodium soy sauce
- 1/4 cup (59 ml) water
- 1/4 cup (55 g) brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons (30 ml) hoisin sauce
- 2 tablespoons (30 ml) rice vinegar
- 1/4 teaspoon (0.5 g) red pepper flakes optional
- 1 green onion thinly sliced, for garnish
- Sesame seeds for garnish
- Steamed rice for serving
Instructions
- In a large bowl, toss the thinly sliced steak with cornstarch until evenly coated.
- Place the coated steak in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Spray lightly with cooking oil. You may need to cook in batches to avoid overcrowding.
- Air fry the steak at 400°F (200°C) for 8-10 minutes, flipping the steak halfway through. Remove and set aside.
- In a saucepan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the garlic and ginger, and cook for about 1 minute until fragrant.
- Pour the soy sauce, water, brown sugar, hoisin, and rice vinegar into the pan and whisk to combine. Bring to a simmer. Cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly. If desired, add red pepper flakes for a spicy kick.
- Add the steak to the pan with the sauce and toss to coat. Stir until all the beef is coated and the sauce thickens, about 3 minutes.
- Transfer to a serving dish and garnish with green onions and sesame seeds.
- Serve over steamed rice.
Notes
- The sauce will thicken more when you add the beef.
All air fryers have different wattage and may cook at different rates. You may need to adjust the time or temp for the best results.
