Air Fryer Banana Chips are a great snack or simple dessert to make in the air fryer that require only a handful of ingredients and an air fryer to make.
One of my family’s favorite snacks to make in the air fryer are these banana chips. If you haven’t had them yet, you’re in for a treat. They’re so easy to make in the air fryer and you can pop a few in your mouth whenever you’re feeling a little hungry or want a sweet snack.
Why You’ll Love It
- Crispy perfection: The controlled cooking environment ensures that each chip is evenly cooked, providing a satisfying crunch in every bite.
- Versatile: Perfect for snacking or sprinkle them on yogurt, add them to your morning cereal, or use them as a topping for desserts. The possibilities are endless!
- Better than store-bought: With minimal added ingredients and no deep frying, you can indulge in a crunchy treat without compromising your health goals.

Ingredients You’ll Need
- Ripe bananas – Choose bananas that are yellow with a few brown spots for optimal sweetness. Ripe or very ripe bananas work well for this recipe. Unripe don’t work well.
- Lemon juice – Adds a zesty flavor and prevents the bananas from browning too quickly. You can use freshly squeezed lemon juice or pre-packaged lemon juice from the grocery store.
- Cinnamon – This is optional, but it adds a lovely aromatic flavor.
Equipment Information
- Air fryer: I use this 4-quart basket-style air fryer. It’s large enough to fit a meal for 4-6. But some things need more space in the air fryer basket, so they cook evenly.
- Kitchen tongs: It’s very easy to remove food from your air fryer with kitchen tongs. I use these kitchen tongs that are silicon coated so they don’t scratch the interior.
Helpful Tips
- To ensure even cooking, slice the bananas uniformly. This not only improves the way they look but also guarantees consistent crispiness.
- Experiment with the thickness of the banana slices. Thinner slices result in a crispier texture, while slightly thicker slices can provide a chewier bite.
- Using lemon juice to stop the banana chips from turning brown will give them a slight lemon flavor. If you air fry the bananas as soon as you cut them you don’t need to use the lemon juice.
How to Make Air Fryer Banana Chips
Step 1: Prepare the bananas
Peel the bananas and slice them into 1/8-inch rounds. Try and cut the slices as close to the same size as possible. This will ensure they cook at the same rate.
Place the banana slices in a bowl and toss them with lemon juice. This will help prevent them from turning brown.
If you want to add additional flavor, sprinkle the banana slices with cinnamon and toss to coat evenly. You can also just leave them plain if you want.
Step 2: Air Fry
Arrange the banana slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket, ensuring they are not overlapping.
Air fry at 260°F (125°C) for 15 minutes, flip them and continue cooking for 12 minutes more. Check them at this point. They should be crispy and golden brown. If they are still soft, cook for 3-4 more minutes and check again.
Step 3: Let cool
Remove the banana chips from the air fryer and let them cool for a few minutes before serving. They will firm up as they cool.
How to Store
Store leftover banana chips in an airtight container at room temperature. Ensure the container is sealed tightly to maintain the chips’ crispiness. While these chips are best enjoyed fresh, they can be stored for up to a week.
To prevent moisture absorption, consider adding a paper towel to the container. This helps retain the chips’ crunch.
Additions & Flavorings
You can flavor homemade banana chips with a variety of options. Why not try something different each time.
- Cinnamon sugar
- Honey and sea salt
- Chili lime seasoning (try Tajin)
- Chocolate drizzle
- A sprinkle of pumpkin spice
Questions About the Recipe
How thin should I slice the bananas?
Aim for slices between 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. Thinner slices result in a crispier texture, while slightly thicker slices may be chewier.
How do I know when the banana chips are done?
The chips are done when they turn golden brown and have a crispy texture. Keep an eye on them, especially towards the end of the cooking time, to prevent burning.
Can I use green bananas for this recipe?
While technically possible, green bananas are starchier and less sweet. For the best flavor and sweetness, it’s recommended to use ripe bananas with yellow skins and brown spots.
Can I use other spices besides cinnamon?
Absolutely! Experiment with spices like nutmeg, cardamom, or a pinch of sea salt for different flavor variations.
Can I use frozen bananas for this recipe?
Frozen bananas may release more moisture during cooking, affecting the crispiness. It’s recommended to use fresh, ripe bananas for the best results.
